About me
“I’ve found this passion while I was studying Equipment Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon. After my graduation, I worked as an intern at an Architecture studio and quickly realized that I wanted to increase my knowledge in Ceramics. So I went back to the capital for another year to pursue that.
Upon returning to Terceira Island — Azores, my hometown, the place I always felt I was meant to be, I adapted my garage to create my own workspace: in February 2017, the Studio was born.”

Adolfo Mendonça — Designer, ceramist, artist
The strength of the azorean roots

Adolfo Mendonça was born in 1993. He grew up in an environment where the arts prevailed, developing a special interest in painting and photography, mainly due to his grandfather, Mário Pereira da Silva — amateur photographer and collector.
To start the activity, Adolfo restored the furniture from his grandfather’s workshop, which, in a way, is still present in the ceramist’s creative process. In turn, when exploring techniques used in drawing and painting, he developed an unique style that nowadays is reflected in his pieces.

Workspace
The garage became a multifunctional space with distinct areas: a small office, the production space, a photography studio and even room for storage. Between walls, nature clearly prevails and the sound of the sea floods the studio.
Here, the search for more knowledge and new techniques is constant, having the primary aim of combining handcrafted techniques with design principles.
Each day, Adolfo immerses himself in his creativity where ideas emerge and new projects come to life.

“The surrounding green and the sound of the sea…are such important elements for the development of new ideas. It helps me to give them life!”

The ceramist strongly believes in environmental sustainability and seeks, whenever possible, to reflect that belief in his pieces.
The search for recyclable materials and handcrafted production results in objects with ethical value which reflect the intend of sensitizing people to preserve and appreciate nature.

Curiosities
His hobbies include snorkeling and fishkeeping.
In the middle of the day, he loves to dive in the sea to get back to work full of inspiration.
While in the studio, he’s probably listening to Elliot Moss and James Blake.
His co-workers are three dogs — Buri, Yuka and Shiva — and many cats.
